[Wuhan Release] Wuhan Homsh Technologies Co., Ltd. (referred to as "Homsh Tech") announced on September 17,2018. from Wuhan Future Sci. & Tech. City of Optics Valley, where the company headquarters is located, that their R&D team has successfully designed the iris recognition ASIC chip Qianxin chip Q80. In order to invent this chip, Homsh Tech has spent seven years of efforts, invested tens of millions of dollars, and taken advantage of their superior resources and core microelectronic design technologies. It has already passed robust and strict functional and performance tests.
The iris is the only externally visible internal organ of the human body. When used to verify the identity of an individual, the iris has great advantages over other identification media from the aspects of identity uniqueness, lifetime stability, privacy security and anti-counterfeiting properties. Since the discovery of iris recognition in the 1980s, its application was limited to government, law enforcement, finance, etc., and could not be as widely applied as fingerprint recognition technology. The main reasons for this were that iris recognition technology was expensive, bulky, and consumed large amounts of power.
As the industry's first iris recognition ASIC chip, the successful tapeout and scale production of the Q80 chip has completely solved the three problems of high cost, large size and high power consumption, making the popularization of the applications of iris biometric technology inevitable.
The QX8001 chip is fabricated in a 40nm semiconductor process and is available in QFN44 and QFN68 packages. The volume is 5mmX5mmX1mm and 7mmX7mmX1mm, respectively. The clock frequency is 100MHz and the average power consumption is only 0.1 watt. This chip has the ability to process high-definition images of 1920X1080 pixels, with an image encoding speed of 100 milliseconds, a matching speed of 90,000 templates/second, a monocular failure acceptance rate (FAR) of 10-7, and a monocular failure rejection rate(FRR) of 10-3.
Due to its unique cost-effectiveness, the Q80 can be integrated into many general-purpose smart terminal equipment, such as smart watches, smart phones, smart door locks, and smart access devices, performing general applications such as login, boot, encryption, payment, and door opening. This chip can also be integrated into special terminal equipment by manufacturers such as iris collector, police service, and customs clearance machine, performing specialized applications such as iris bio-feature construction, black and white list search, as well as border and entry and exit immigration control.
The success tape-out of the Q80 chip marks a new era of iris biometric technology, which is of great significance to the development of the iris biometrics industry and the information security industry in China as well as around world.
Homsh Tech has always adhered to its mission, never forgetting its original goal. Its people are driven to push the boundaries of technological innovation and create continuous breakthroughs to build up the core competitiveness of iris recognition. They have realized their corporate vision of iris recognition “anywhere, anytime”, greatly contributing to China's high-tech development.
